Cardiff-by-the-Sea, usually referred to as Cardiff, is a classic Southern California beach community located in Encinitas, bordering Solana Beach to the south in San Diego County, California. Cardiff boasts a moderate climate, breathtaking views, 2.6 miles of Pacific coastline, a 900-acre ecological reserve, world-class surfing and lovely residents who enjoy this beautiful community.

In 1911, this former farming community began to develop in Cardiff, when developer J. Frank Cullen broke ground to build new homes. The land was cultivated by Hector MacKinnon who settled here in 1875 and was the only farmer between Oceanside and San Diego, along the coast. Cullen christened the large tract of land after Cardiff, Wales, and named the streets after places in the British Isles. Cullen envisioned Cardiff becoming a "seaside playground". He built a hotel overlooking the bluff, a long ocean pier and bathhouse in 1912.

Cardiff-by-the-Sea is a thriving coastal community with a laid back vibe! This San Diego spot, located 30 miles north of San Diego is known for its small village hospitality and its welcoming atmosphere. Cardiff-by-the-Sea has warm sunny days and cool evenings that prevail throughout the year. Afternoon ocean breezes keep the temperature pleasant and the community flourishing.

Locals and tourists alike enjoy this charming, beautiful, friendly beach town with quaint shops, delicious cuisine, an arts community, yoga studios, ocean sports, parks, a walkable downtown area complete with a linear organic community park and plenty of biking opportunities. Cardiff is home to a few well-known surf spots, such as Swami's and Cardiff Reef. It is not unusual to find people sunbathing on the beach in January in Cardiff!
